Teasers are a great addition to a artificial surf rig. Often they will out produce the plug or metal that they proceed (or follow).
They are most effective when gamefish are on small baits like bay anchovies, silversides, peanut bunker, killifish, sand eels or finger mullet.
I fish 30 or 40 lb. leader so when I'm choosing a teaser hook I make sure the hook eye is large. I also look for a very strong sharp hook. With most pluggers using 30 lb. plus braid and heavy drags settings, a weak hook is not what you want unless you plan on letting the fish run you all over the place.
My favorite teaser is a simple bucktail Deceiver run off a dropper loop from my leader. My favorite colors are blurple, olive/white (silverside), tan/white (bay anchovy), yellow/white, chartreuse/ white, and gray/pink/white.
The Bay Anchovy has a pale tan back with purple and blue reflections above a narrow silvery lateral line, pale below with a translucent abdomen. Bay Anchovies attain a maximum size of about 3 inches. Throughout the season various sizes will be encountered between 1 to 3 inches so match the size that is present. They move in large densely packed schools. Bay Anchovies can tolerate a wide temperature range.
Atlantic silversides are a long, slender, and thin-bodied fish with two dorsal fins, with translucent gray green backs, a rounded white belly, and large scales with smooth margins. Their rear fins are moderately forked. They have a short head with large eyes and a small mouth. The top of the head, nose, and chin are grayish. Along each side, from the pectoral fin to its caudal fin , is a distinct silver band outlined by a narrow black stripe.
Silversides resemble anchovies, differing mainly by a smaller mouth.
